W.E Apprentice Program
Learn a trade. Build a career.
Start your engineering career right here in the Wheatbelt.
At Wongan Engineering, apprentices don’t stand on the sidelines watching someone else do the work.
You’ll learn by doing, working alongside experienced tradespeople and building practical skills in welding, fabrication, agricultural manufacturing, machinery repairs, and general engineering.
Based in Wongan Hills, we’ve been training apprentices since 2005 and we’re proud to play a part in developing the next generation of Wheatbelt boilermakers.
More than an apprenticeship.
It’s the start of trade you can take anywhere.
An apprenticeship at Wongan Engineering combines formal training with hands-on experience in a working regional engineering business.
You'll work towards a nationally recognised Certificate in Engineering Tradesperson Fabrication (Boilermaking/Welding), while learning alongside people who work in the trade every day.
And we don't believe apprentices should spend four years doing the same repetitive task.
As your skills and confidence grow, you'll get exposure to different areas of the business and take on more responsibility.
You'll finish your apprenticeship with more than a qualification.
You'll have real workshop experience behind you.
What will you learn?
There’s a lot more to the trade than learning how to weld.
During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop practical skills across areas such as:
-
Learn and develop welding skills while working on real agricultural equipment, fabrication projects and manufactured products.
-
Learn how steel goes from raw material to a finished product through measuring, cutting, preparing, assembling and welding.
-
Get involved in manufacturing W.E Comb Trailers, Wespray Boomsprays and other equipment built right here in Wongan Hills.
-
Learn how to assess damaged or worn equipment, identify the problem and work through practical ways to repair it.
-
Build the skills to interpret workshop drawings, take accurate measurements and turn a plan into a finished product.
-
Learn how to safely use workshop tools, machinery and equipment while developing the habits expected of a qualified tradesperson.
-
Not every job comes with instructions.
You'll learn how experienced tradespeople approach a problem, consider the options and find a practical solution.
Learn from people who’ve done it before.
You’ll work alongside experienced tradespeople from day one.
Our apprentices work alongside senior members of our team rather than being separated from the everyday work happening in the workshop.
That means you’ll be able to ask questions, watch different approaches, learn from mistakes, and gradually take on more challenging work as your skills develop.
We expect our apprentices to be willing to learn. In return, we’ll give you the opportunity to actually learn.
We’ll cover your TAFE fees.
Your formal training is an important part of becoming a qualified tradesperson.
Eligible apprentices undertake a Certificate in Engineering Tradesperson Fabrication (Boilermaking/Welding), with Wongan Engineering covering your TAFE fees.
You'll combine your TAFE training with practical experience in our Wongan Hills workshop so the skills you're learning aren't just theoretical — you're using them at work too.
TAFE fees paid by Wongan Engineering.
What you’ll work on.
No two weeks look the same.
One of the biggest advantages of completing your apprenticeship in a regional engineering workshop is the variety of work you'll be exposed to.
Depending on what's happening in the workshop, you could be working on:
W.E Comb Trailers
Wespray Boomsprays
Agricultural machinery repairs
Custom fabrication
Equipment modifications
General engineering projects
Steel preparation and assembly
Welding and fabrication
Trailer repairs
Local farming equipment
As your skills develop, so will the work you're trusted to take on.
Who makes a good W.E. apprentice?
We don’t expect you to already know how to do everything.
That's the point of an apprenticeship.
Previous welding or workshop experience can be useful, but we're much more interested in finding someone with the right attitude.
We're looking for people who:
Enjoy practical, hands-on work
Are genuinely interested in learning a trade
Turn up on time and are ready to work
Listen and are willing to learn from others
Take pride in doing a job properly
Can work as part of a team
Are comfortable asking questions
Take workplace safety seriously
Can accept feedback and use it to improve
Are willing to have a go
You don't need to arrive as a tradesperson.
Apprenticeships in the Wheatbelt matter.
We're proud to manufacture and repair equipment in regional WA — but doing that requires skilled people.
Training apprentices is one way we can help keep those skills here.
Since 2005, Wongan Engineering has helped train apprentices who have gone on to work as qualified tradespeople both within our business and throughout the Wheatbelt.
For us, the apprentice program isn't just about filling a position in the workshop.
It's about creating pathways into skilled regional employment and giving people the opportunity to build a career without automatically having to leave the Wheatbelt to do it.
Ready to start your trade?
We want to hear from you.
If you're practical, willing to learn and interested in building a career in welding and fabrication, get in touch with us.
